If you don't recognise it, don't drink it
Read the back of a protein shake. Count how many ingredients you recognize.
That number tells you more than the macros do. Real ingredients have one job and one name. Synthetic additives have abbreviated chemistry names.
There are five categories of additives you'll find on most protein shake labels. Each one is solving a problem real food doesn't have.
Gums and emulsifiers — carrageenan, xanthan, guar, soy lecithin. Job: trick your mouth into thinking the drink has body. The honest version: real coconut cream emulsifies, thickens, and stabilises in one step. No help needed.
Stabilisers — cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium phosphate. Job: prevent the contents from separating during 18 months in a warehouse. The honest version: build the product to be drunk fresher, and use ingredients that don't separate to begin with.
Fillers — maltodextrin, refined corn starch. Job: cheap bulk, mouthfeel padding. The honest version: there is no honest version. Fillers exist to lower production cost. Real food doesn't need filling.
Artificial sweeteners — sucralose, acesulfame, aspartame, stevia extract. Job: deliver 'sugar-free' macros at low cost. The honest version: real sugar, in small amounts. (We wrote a whole post on this — read it here.)
Cheap oils — usually refined sunflower, soybean, canola, or rapeseed, listed simply as 'vegetable oil' with no qualifier. Job: cheap fat for emulsion. The thing to look for on a label: the word 'cold-pressed' before the oil name. Refined and cold-pressed are two different products from the same plant — one uses solvents and high heat, the other doesn't.

- Unrefined raw cane sugar in small amounts handles sweetness
- Real cocoa, real Madagascan vanilla, real peppermint oil handle the flavour
- Salt for balance
Every ingredient is recognizable as food. Every one has a single job. No engineering required.
How to read a label in 30 seconds
- Read each word out loud. If you can't recognise it as food, that's the signal.
- Watch for 'flavorings' — it's a hiding place for compounds that didn't make the cut for the front of the bottle.
- Watch for anything ending in '-ose,' '-ame,' or '-ol.' That's a sweetener.
- If you see gums + emulsifiers + stabilisers stacked together, the brand is engineering around the absence of real fat.
- A short list usually wins — but length is the signal, not the rule. Twelve real ingredients beat eight synthetic ones.
The simplest test of whether a product was built to be drunk or built to be shelf-stable: ask whether you'd put each ingredient in your kitchen.
